When Social Media Becomes Addictive: Legal Claims Against Platforms
Social media may seem like a harmless way to spend your free time or catch up with friends. Recently, claims have been filed against social media platforms alleging that they promote self-harm and addictive behavior among young users. Harmful content on these websites may inhibit a young person’s ability to regulate emotions and manage time, feeding further into addiction. If your child or someone you know has fallen victim to social media addiction, reach out to our Pennsylvania personal injury attorneys at HGSK Injury Lawyers.
Pending Addiction Lawsuits Against Social Media Companies
In recent years, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have been held accountable for algorithms that cause addictive behavior. Many suits are being pursued by parents, school districts, and states on behalf of young people. When several cases are dealing with the same issues, the court may transfer the case to another jurisdiction to consolidate proceedings.
Numerous social media addiction suits have been transferred to the Northern District of California as part of the Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 3047). As of April 2026, over 2,000 cases are pending against Meta Platforms, Inc. The claimants allege that faulty site designs permitted young users to have maximum screen time, feeding into addictive behaviors, causing physical and emotional harm. Although numerous lawsuits are being combined, each case will have a separate outcome.
Landmark Verdicts Against Meta and YouTube
K.G.M. Trial
In a recent social media lawsuit, Meta and Google were found negligent for a woman who attributed her social media use as a child to her depression and anxiety. The plaintiff began to use YouTube at age six and Instagram at age 11, attributing her mental health struggles to the use of both platforms. The legal strategy behind the case was unique in that it did not target the content on the sites but the design itself. The plaintiff alleged that the use of infinite scroll, constant notifications, autoplay, and beauty filters lured young users and kept them online.
The now 20-year-old plaintiff claims that the compulsive use of both platforms contributed to her social withdrawal, body dysmorphia, and depression. She compared these apps to a digital casino, creating psychological dependency among users. In March 2026, a California jury awarded $3 million in compensatory damages, with Meta responsible for 70% and Google 30%, and awarded $3 million in punitive damages. Both Meta and Google plan to appeal. This case is likely to influence the more than 2,000 pending lawsuits in MDL No. 3047.
New Mexico Trial Against Meta
Less than a day before the K.G.M. verdict, a New Mexico jury found Meta responsible for enabling child exploitation on Facebook and Instagram. Meta was held accountable for disregarding consumer protection laws and misleading users on the safety of its platforms. The jury rendered a $375 million verdict against Meta, a $5,000 maximum penalty for the estimated 75,000 adolescent users affected. Meta plans to appeal.
