Start the Year Off Safely: 5 Vehicle Maintenance Questions to Ask Yourself

Posted By Haggerty, Goldberg, Schleifer & Kupersmith, P.C.

Nowadays, majority of people spend many hours on the road each day. Whether a person is running errands, driving to work, picking the kids up from school, or just going for a cruise, it is important that his or her vehicle functions correctly and safely in order to avoid serious and harmful car accidents from occurring. Because vehicle maintenance is a driver’s responsibility, a motorist can be held liable if a faulty or broken part causes another person to sustain injuries in a car accident.

To ensure you, your family, and other drivers sharing the road are safe, ask yourself the following questions and, if necessary, repair your vehicle or take it to a professional to be repaired as necessary:

  1. Do my taillights, brake lights, and headlights work properly? It is important that all lights work to ensure you are visible to other drivers and to ensure you can see the road well. Failure to ensure all lights are working can lead to serious car accidents.
  2. Are your tires in good and safe condition? Worn, warped, or deflated tires can cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle, putting other motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians at risk for serious injuries.
  3. Are my rotors in good shape, and are my brakes working properly? If your vehicle shakes when you hit the brakes, this may be a sign that your rotors are warped, which can be extremely dangerous if they are not fixed right away. In addition, worn brake pads can also lead to serious car accidents if not cared for immediately
  4. Are my windshield wipers working correctly? It is important that your car is safe to drive in any type of weather condition, including rainstorms. Cracked or old windshield wipers may not work correctly, lessening the amount of visibility you have while driving and putting you at risk for an injurious collision.
  5. Should I take my vehicle to the mechanic for an overall inspection? If you have any doubts that your car is not working 100% properly, it is best to take your car to a trustworthy mechanic who can examine all parts of your car to ensure it is safe to drive.
